Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial

The park within the entrance area for the USS Arizona Memorial.

Pearl Harbor is a National Historic Landmark.

Approaching the memorial.

"To the memory of the gallant men here entombed and their shipmates who gave their lives in action on December 7, 1941 on the USS Arizona."

The wall is covered with names and ranks. At the top, it says "United States Navy".

The other half of the wall. On the right is a small list titled "United States Marine Corps".

"USS Arizona survivors interred with their shipmates."

Outside the memorial are markers over each ship that went down.

You can see some parts of the Arizona just under the water.

Look near the top of this picture to see the edge of the ship sticking out of the water.

That Night

That night, a number of friends asked me if I wanted to come with them on a walk. "There's this great place, right off the beach - you have to see it!" We wandered around for a while trying to find the place. Everyone was singing and laughing; I would find out later why they were in such high spirits!

We bought some cheap leis

Andrew is kneeling and presenting a ring We finally found the pier. We walked out to the end and looked around for a while. I saw some other tourists walking up the pier, and I stepped aside so they could get to the very end. I didn't recognize Andrew until he was about 6 inches away.

"What are you doing here? How did you get here?" I cried.

He knelt down and proposed, right then. I was in shock. I had no idea he had been planning this from the very start!
